DEHRADUN: A contingent of 86 IPS (Probationary) officers from the 78th RR batch, currently undergoing rigorous training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad, visited the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) battalion at Jolly Grant on Saturday as part of their educational tour.
Led by Deputy Director of SVPNPA, Shri Chaitanya Siriprolu, the delegation’s visit was orchestrated under the guidance of Uttarakhand Director General of Police, Deepam Seth. The tour aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical training and the ground realities of managing disasters in the Himalayan terrain.
Commandant of SDRF, Shri Arpan Yaduvanshi, provided the trainees with an immersive look into the unit’s operational framework. He emphasized that in a disaster-prone state like Uttarakhand, success hinges on seamless synergy between the SDRF, the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), and federal agencies like the NDRF.
“Rapid information exchange and timely resource deployment are not just tactical choices; they are the fundamental pillars of life-saving operations,” said Commandant Shri Arpan Yaduvanshi during the briefing. “Our role requires navigating geographically sensitive zones where decision-making must be both swift and accurate.”
The curriculum for the day went beyond textbooks, focusing on complex, real-world case studies. The trainee officers were briefed on the high-stakes rescue missions at the Silkyara Tunnel, Dharali, and the Reni region. These sessions highlighted the unique challenges posed by treacherous mountainous terrain, unpredictable weather, and communication blackouts.

“Understanding the humanitarian dimensions of disaster management is just as crucial as understanding the technology,” noted a member of the delegation. “Witnessing how these teams coordinate under extreme pressure has been an eye-opening experience for all of us.”
The SDRF team also provided a practical demonstration of state-of-the-art rescue gear, offering the future police leaders a tactile understanding of how modern equipment functions in field conditions. Furthermore, the trainees were briefed on the broader nuances of Uttarakhand’s policing systems and law enforcement strategies.
Also present at the event were Deputy Commandant Shri Shubhank Raturi, Assistant Commandant Shri Sushil Rawat, and In-charge Training Shri Pramod Rawat, alongside other senior officials.
As the visit concluded, the probationary officers lauded the discipline and professional competence displayed by the SDRF personnel. For the 86 officers, the visit served as a memorable milestone in their training, grounding their academic preparation in the harsh, unpredictable realities of disaster response that they may one day be called upon to lead.
